Hello, fellow filmmakers and Scribes,
Blogs like this are wonderful because they are great for like-minded individuals to connect. Great stuff! Kudos to all of you!
Now for a little about me: I have been writing screenplays ever since a college buddy "tricked" me into taking a scriptwriting course in college... You see, my major was 3-D illustration and graphic design. I needed some humanities courses to fill up my credits and I was taking a creative writing class where a friend suggested that I take a scriptwriting class which was a whopping three credits! But little did I know I had to finish a 100 page script by the end of the year! So between going to college full-time, doing my portfolio, working part time (and having a life), I had to crank out a feature-length screenplay! EGADS!!! But that was when my love affair with scriptwriting was born and I have been doing it for over 18 years now.
I have won several awards, had a reading of a script sponsored by Disney, came close to making a sale several times, met many hardships, bad agents, shysters, disappointments, joined script writing networks, made some films... but I'm still working toward the goal of being a pro scriptwriter.
I am currently trying to co-produce a short film with a commercial director, but of course, as Murphy's Law would have it, our lead actress in unavailable. Also finding the main location (the perfect house) is alluding us... money is also a factor. We need investors. I am putting up a small percentage of the budget, which automatically forces me to put on the business suit... I just wanted to be the writer on this project, but as luck would have it, I have to do a lot of legwork; casting, location scouting and producing. I may even be employed as the second videographer as I recently purchased a pro Mini DV camera for concert videos... another long story...
I shot a two hour concert film with two good friends of mine... It was a three camera shoot. I had a borrowed consumer grade camera (blech!) and the shoot was pretty off the cuff and with the band's consent (of course). The lighting was poor and there was very little communication ( we didn't have headsets...chaos!) We were totally unorganized and unprepared (and so was the band to accommodate us: a group of Swedish guys called the Flower Kings). But miraculously we shot a pretty decent two hour concert video. You can see a few videos on YouTube. The ones shot in New Jersey are part of the DVD we hope to release as an official bootleg later this year, (but I'm not holding my breath!) The band did a pro shoot in Europe recently and they are all hot and bothered hyping that (of course) so my baby is on ice (as usual). But I really don't care because the videos on YouTube are getting good responses from fans, (4 and half star average and over 4000 hits as of this typing). I can't complain. Video is meant to be seen! LOL!
So, as of the moment, I am busy writing a love budget indie that I hope to shoot myself, and maybe get a good agent... I don't know. The old way of working and submitting has only met with rejection and the standard, "Sorry, but...good luck." So now I am busy creating my own "Luck". I may put myself into hock doing it, but at least I can say "I did it!" If I fail, at least I can say I tried and maybe learned something.
So the moral of the story is "create your own Luck".
Keep on writing!
Angie
