TECHQUA IKACHI: Aboriginal Warning (2006) is dedicated to Hopi elders James Kots, Helen Kots, Nora Monogye, David Monongye, Thomas Banyacya, Carolyn Tawangyama, Ralph Tawangyama, and Dan Katchongva. They requested a film be made about the Hopi prophecy. For many decades, the Hopi and Dineh have been protesting against mining on their sacred Black Mesa, and like many indigenous peoples, the Hopi traditionals prophesize that extracting oil and minerals from Mother Earth will bring disaster. >Part One: history documentary AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A HOPI In this short, James Kots describes his life from reservation to government school to hard times to war and back home to the traditional way of the farmer. The Hopi philosophy is the indigenous way of life close to nature. >Part Two: prophecy docudrama EARTH SPIRIT In this feature story, indigenous people resist the exploitation and pollution of their land by oil and mining interests. A teen gone wrong in the city is drawn back home to help defend the land of his ancestors. Their prophecy, like that of the Hopi and many others, warns that violating the earth will bring disaster. . Official Selection, Dreamspeakers International Film Festival Official Selection, Mumbai International Film Festival This film advocates social action with a spiritual consciousness. We began with our documentary AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A HOPI (1970), but the reservation police stopped our filming. Years later in California, we completed EARTH SPIRIT, which does not mention the name Hopi nor the name Native American nor the name American Indian because it offers to speak for many indigenous peoples, but the film came into being because of those Hopi elders’ request and plays like a docudrama from Hopi-land, speaking their prophecy. As in modern expressionistic drama, as well as in classical drama of many cultures, the story and the characters are representative–in this case, representative of similar stories from many peoples around the world.
