2010-Jun-5 - What You Need, What They Need.
There's a reason you're reading this. There's a reason you're doing this altogether. There's an evident gap in this world, and you can feel it. It's hard to put your thumb on it, but you know it's missing. It's like walking around a party with every one of your friends, but then one disappears. It takes a while to figure who slipped out, but no worries, eventually I believe we can figure this out.
There's a loss of love. A love not of movies, or music, or novels for that matter. But love for stories. Probably because too many people aren't aware of how powerful they can be. How much an "example of life" can change someone's own. The reason I think this is, is because as storytellers, we thrive on example. What we've been experiencing unfortunately, is a lack of examples. When's the last time a friend told you they saw a movie that changed their life? Or altered their perception of a reality, even just a little bit? When's the last time someone connected with a character?
As far as my life is concerned, whenever a movie or novel is brought to my attention, the events and jokes within the story seem to be all that make it out alive. The general theme, the lesson, the mistakes, no one seems to take this with them. But then again, a lot of the films I've seen lately don't have any of these anyways. The story that the person was just put through didn't teach them anything at all. There wasn't a "big picture" brought to light at any point.
What I think has happened, is that stories are only written these days as a form of entertainment. Not as a form of example. Sure stories can be fun, don't get me wrong. But if you entertain an audience for 2 hours, that's all they're going to get from it, entertainment. A story should leave the viewer with something, a reminder of an outlook, a re-hashed point of view about what's considered "right". A story should cause people to think, not numb them.
The typical fun "exciting" story pulls the viewer in, then keeps them there until the story decides to let them go. But what happens is, the story has become no more than an amusement park ride, a mental rollercoaster, telling the audience "that was fun, wasn't it?", then sends the back to work.
But here's where the problem lies. Nobody took anything from it. The viewer goes back to work, unchanged, and probably sees life and their problems in the exact same way as when they entered the theater. There's nothing to reminisce about. Nobody goes on a rollercoaster and spends the next week remembering how great it was. It was fun, but now it's over. Start. Finish.
The problem with this is that it's causing stories to be regurgitated, consumed like everything else. When it comes to movies, we download one, watch it, then move on. If there's a sweet action scene or tit shot, it'll probably be passed to friends solely for those reasons. But a film should be passed on because there's a friend who needs it. Someone we know is going through a rough patch and we don't know what to say or how to help . . but we do happen to have an "example" of their situation they could watch. A way of looking at their scenario.
Stories should have advice, hints, tips, tricks, whatever you want to call it, but all for how to live. How to be a successful human being. The movies I've seen lack any of this heavily. How to Train Your Dragon was definitely the best one in a while, you can tell the writer cared. Now that's a rollercoaster with a lesson.
If only we had more writers who remembered how much they love stories, instead of using them as a medium for sweet special effects, or a way to get a hot young startlet into lingerie. All movies these days are looking for is a chance to put something "pretty" into a context, and it's disgusting.
