Learn Writing Techniques by Reading Great Screenplays

Before I wrote my first screenplay, I read many screenplays that I admired.  By reading and studying the techniques used by produced screenwriters, I learned how to create a tight, exciting plot; how to format scenes; how to write concise action descriptions; and how to create believable characters and punchy dialogue.

I read and studied The Omen,  Kramer v. Kramer, The Shawshank Redemtion, and many others. The learning process is much like an artist studying the masters who came before him. With so many screenplays now available in published book format and online, it's easier than ever to access great scipts.

Hello

Elaine,

I just arrived. Prompted by a magazine article about platforming. Wrote one script already. Working on next. New to blogging. Not sure how to navigate this site, but I want interaction with writers and producers, story editors, & teachers.

My name's Bob.

True Indeed

Elaine,

I couldn't agree more in regards to studying screenplays that have actually gone through the entire process of production. It's inspiring to see and invaluable as a learning tool. I myself read The Shawshank Redemption as well as The Green Mile. I love Frank Darabont's lean 'n mean style of writing. His dialogue is so real it jumps off the page.

I just recently copied Ocean's Eleven from the site. Can't wait to read it...the dialogue in the movie was so snappy and crisp that it left me in awe.

George Clooney's line to his potential partners, after proposing to rob the casino. "Now if that's not your particular brand of vodka..."

Classic. I haven't read any of your articles, but I plan to in the near future. Until then...

Stay up and keep writing.

- J.
