What is a Film Trend?
One of the most recent film trends I've noticed is the remaking of old films. War of the Worlds, Cheaper by the Dozen, Poseidon, King Kong, and The Omen are all remakes of films that were box office successes in the past.
When one studio after another starts rushing to repackage old films, you see a trend. This doesn't necessarily guarantee that the studio will make money on it, considering that they often spend exorbitant amounts of money to remake a film that isn't as good as the original (which cost a lot less).
I often wonder why they do it. I suppose the studios think that they'll get a good return on their investments because audiences who liked the original films will rush to see the remakes. But this isn't necessarily true. And if the remake isn't as good as the oldie, word gets around fast and results in a flop. Personally, I'd rather see a new film with fresh ideas than a remake of an oldie.

Remakes
I agree, E.
It cracks me up that the date 6.6.06 comes once a century and Hollywood went with a remake to try to cash in on it. For the millenium we got "Independence Day" (among other disaster flicks). 1992 we got Chris Colombus stuff (predictable but original). For the devil date just passed there wasn't ONE idea Hollywood felt it could get behind.
Last I read over 40,000 scripts each year are submitted just in the US alone. Conservatively, 10% of those pass muster. That's 4,000. And what of that number are horror movies? One third? More? A third. 1,333. Give the machine two years worth for development, etc. and you have a selection pool of at least 2,600+ original story ideas to choose from for ONE film on one date.
Hollywood got behind none of them, ZERO. All these hot directors and self annointed producers, God slayers and naysayers couldn't dredge one original scary story up.
Curious how scary that stat is. Maybe the date just wasn't that significant? Maybe their audience test machines' results were less than hopeful? Maybe the gore craze desensatized, or worse killed, America's understanding of horror? I don't know.
But I do know I work in the service industry in Philadelphia. I'm exposed to a huge cross section of movie goers. No one I spoke with, me too, saw "The Omen" this weekend or talked about seeing it. I'm sure next EW will have it's ticker symbol and YTD return (factoring in P/E ratios and median market value as compared to it's index. Is that FTSE, CAC, DOW? No, it's the DUL index.) |
